The BMICH Welfare Society organised its annual blood donation campaign at the Cinema Lounge of the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on 30 September.
The campaign marked the 67th commemoration of Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, the 26th commemoration of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, and the 18th commemoration of Anura Bandaranaike, former Speaker of Parliament and Cabinet Minister.
The BMICH, built as a memorial to S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, has made the donation drive a regular part of its annual commemorations. Organisers said the initiative reflects the spirit of public service associated with the three leaders and highlights the role every citizen can play in supporting the nation’s healthcare needs.
“By giving a little of ourselves, we can help save lives in our community, and that is the best way to honour the legacy of leaders who devoted their lives to public service.”
BMICH employees, their families and members of the public participated in the programme.
Voluntary blood donation remains essential to the country’s health system, as blood is required daily for surgeries, accident cases, cancer treatment and maternal care. A single donation can benefit up to three patients.
The BMICH Welfare Society expressed its appreciation to all donors, volunteers and medical staff, and said it intends to continue the programme in the coming years.
